چکیده

Heavy-ion beam transport in plasma channels is an option to transport high-current beams which are required in fusion reactor scenarios. The channel provides free electrons that space-charge and current neutralize the ion beams. In addition, the channel creates a large azimuthal magnetic field that prevents the beam ions from leaving the channel. A stable channel is necessary to guarantee good transport properties of the beam [1]. The most threatining instability in a plasma channel is the kink instability, that has helical structure and whose growth is in linear theory given by[2]

MRI channel flows and their parasites

Local simulations of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in accretion disks can exhibit recurrent coherent structures called channel flows. The formation and destruction of these structures may play a role in the development and saturation of MRI-induced turbulence, and consequently help us understand the time-dependent accretion behaviour of certain astrophysical objects. Previous investig...

Rotational Stabilization of Magnetically Collimated Jets

We investigate the launching and stability of extragalactic jets through nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation and linear eigenmode analysis. In the simulations of jet evolution, a small-scale equilibrium magnetic arcade is twisted by a differentially rotating accretion disk. These simulations produce a collimated outflow which is unstable to the current driven m = 1 kink mode for low ...

The effects of sheared toroidal rotation on stability limits in tokamak plasmas

Sheared toroidal rotation is found to increase the ideal external kink stability limit, thought to be the ultimate performance limit in fusion tokamaks. However, at rotation speeds approaching a significant fraction of the Alfvén speed, the toroidal rotation shear drives a Kelvin–Helmholtz-like global plasma instability. Optimizing the rotation profile to maximize the pressure before encounteri...

The role of guide field in relativistic pair plasma reconnection

We study the role of guide field in relativistic magnetic reconnection in a Harris current sheet of pair (e±) plasmas, using linear theories and particlein-cell (PIC) simulations. Two-dimensional PIC simulations exhibit the guide field dependence to the linear instabilities; the tearing or reconnection modes are relatively insensitive, while the relativistic drift-kink instability (RDKI), the f...
